The Stations of the Cross
In preparation for Holy Week and Easter follow the Stations of the Cross. At other times of the year the stations remind us of Christ's journey.

Each of the photographs can be clicked on individually to enable you to view a full size image.

1 The First Station: Jesus is condemned to death Jesus is Condemned to death

Jesus was handed over to Pilate who because he did not want to be unpopular condemned our innocent Lord to be crucified. At this station, let us pray for all who condemn others, for all who blaspheme, all who ridicule the Faith. Pray too for all who have to make decisions of judgment in our courts, all judges, magistrates and all who sit on the jury.

2 The Second Station: Jesus is made to carry his cross Jesus is made to carry his cross.

Here we pray for all who have to carry heavy burdens and especially for those who are unable to cope with life.

3 The Third Station: Jesus falls for the first time Jesus falls for the First Time

Because of his injuries and loss of blood, Jesus was so weak that his steps began to falter. The soldiers hurried him along , striking him and he fell to the ground.

So we pray at this station for all who are weak in body, perhaps due to illness or injury, for all who are weak in mind and unable to face life, for all who are weak in spirit and finding it difficult to begin again and persevere.

4 The Fourth Station: Jesus meets his Blessed Mother Jesus meets his Blessed Mother

Jesus came face to face with Mary, his mother. There was no need for words, in this union of love there was consolation for both of them.

let us pray for all children who are separated from their mother, those whose mothers have died, and for those who find no love and compassion in their relationships. We pray too for all Christian mothers, and for all mothers who create a happy and loving atmosphere and relationship around them.

5 The Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry his cross Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry his cross

The soldiers were afraid that Jesus would not complete the journey to Calvary without help, so they forces a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, to share the heavy weight of the cross.

let us pray that if we are called upon to help someone carry their cross in this life, we will not make excused. Pray for all organisations whose aim it is to help others in need. Pray for anyone we know who may be finding life very difficult and their cross very heavy.

6 The Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the Face of Jesus Veronica wipes the Face of Jesus

Jesus continued the way of the cross, the crown of thorns piercing deeper and deeper into his flesh, blood mixed with sweat, poured down his face and a woman, believed to be named Veronica, made her way through the onlookers and wiped his face with a towel, comforting him a little as he struggled on.

At this station we pray for all doctors and nurses who work in our hospitals, all those who care for the sick in their homes, pray too for all hospices.

7 The seventh Station: Jesus falls the Second Time Jesus falls the Second Time

Although Jesus had received help to carry his cross, and although the blood and sweat had been wiped, He was overwhelmed with such pain that he fell a second time.

We remember at this station those who are homeless, those who have lost hope and in the depths of despair, those who have not the strength to get up and carry on when times are difficult.

8 The eight Station: The Women of Jerusalem mourn for Jesus The Women of Jerusalem mourn for Jesus

Crowds of people watched the painful progress of Jesus towards Calvary. many jeered and mocked but a crowd of women were moved with pity for him and they wept openly.

We pray for those in need of comforting at this time, for those who have no one to comfort them, no one to hold their hand, no shoulder to cry on. Pray that we may always be ready with compassion when needed.

9 the Ninth Station: Jesus falls the Third Time Jesus falls the Third Time

The place of execution was in sight. Jesus exhausted with pain and loss of blood, and jostled along by the soldiers fell again to the ground.

Here was a truly innocent man, suffering as a result of victimisation.

So we pray at this station for all who are innocent, but suffering punishment, all who are ill-treated, all suffering as a result of selfishness, greed, envy, malice, hatred and the wickedness of others.

10 The Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his clothes Jesus is stripped of his clothes

When Jesus reached the place of execution the soldiers stripped Him of his clothes, exposing his naked body to the jeering crowds. What humiliation He must have suffered!

Here it is appropriate that we consider whether we think too much of material things, whether we spend money unnecessarily, whether we have lost our discipline and self-control, whether  whatever we have bought recently was a necessity and not just a luxury, whether we are too concerned about tomorrow.

11 The Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the Cross Jesus is nailed to the Cross

The hour had come, Jesus was placed on the cross, the soldiers drove the nails through his hands and feet. He hung there in agony , watched by those sad women who loved him dearly.

Let us consider the cruelty in today's world, the violence, the terrorism, cruelty towards children and those unable to fend for themselves. Let us consider also our own lack of charity, our lack of concern towards other motorists and pedestrians, the way we ignore people, our willingness to gossip and hurt, our impatience. These are only some of the things that are like nails being hammered again into our Lord's hands and feet.

12 The Twelfth Station: Jesus dies on the Cross Jesus dies on the Cross

Jesus had suffered three long hours on the cross - it must have seemed like eternity. A slow agonising death. Jesus gave up his spirit. the task for which he came on earth was accomplished. It is finished.

13 The Thirteenth Station: Jesus is taken down from the Cross Jesus is taken down from the Cross

Jesus like us in all things except sin. The dead body of Jesus - it is hard to this in - that Jesus really died, that his body became without life, an empty shell. Truly this was the Son of God.

Mary his mother was waiting there to take Him yet again into her arms just as she did the day he was born into this world.  His bruised body, a body that had suffered so much pain - Why? - He suffered for us.

We would not be human if we were entirely unafraid of death, but in spite of human fear let us have hope, for Christ has been there before us. Let us pray that when our time comes we can truly say, the work we came into this world to do for Him is finished and so we must keep praying that we may always try and do His will.

Lord your will not mine be done.

14 The Fourteenth Station: Jesus is placed in the tomb Jesus is placed in the tomb

His body has been prepared for burial and His mother went with friends and laid it in the tomb. Then they went away sorrowing,

Lord Jesus, you came into this world in poverty, you left it in pain and sorrow, help us to realise that in order to live with you we must first learn to die with you. Inspire in us the desire to overcome every sin and imperfection  which prevents us from loving you completely.

We pray for all who will be sorrowing at this time, mourning the loss of a loved one, all who find it difficult who carry on with their own lives afterwards.

15 Jesus has Risen from the tomb

The tomb is empty - It is resurrection day. Jesus, no longer in this world but has given to us the task of proclaiming the Good News. He has given us hope, He will still give us the strength we need to do His work, He will guide us to do His will if only we will ask. he will give us Peace, that peace that passes all man's understanding. He gives us His love - He died because He loves us.
